The Serenade Luna celebrates its premiere

A new watch and a mechanical manufactory movement for women of today

Glashütte Original shows itself in a new light: the German watch manufacturer has developed a new line of feminine timepieces that combines a small format with superb performance and refined design. The Serenade Luna is a mechanical wristwatch whose automatic in-house movement with moon phase display was custom-made for this purpose. A sophisticated and contemporary development whose secrets Glashütte Original reveals exclusively at this time.

A new dimension: the movement

With the Calibre 35, ticking inside the Serenade Luna, the German watch manufactory Glashütte Original presents a new dimension of its artistry – in the true meaning of the word, because the movement with automatic winding was developed specifically for a slim case with a 32.5 mm diameter. It was also necessary to meet the rigorous requirements of precision and everyday usability that the brand demands of all its calibres. The movement, handcrafted and enhanced with aesthetically flawless finishes, is admirable in every respect and from every perspective: working on a small scale, the manufactory’s engineers, designers, and watchmakers have created a truly great work.

Moon phase redefined

The moon phase numbers among the most beautiful complications of the art of watchmaking. Glashütte Original has dedicated itself to its artful crafting for many years and has continued to present exciting new versions. Now the Serenade Luna gives the traditional display a fresh face: in a round dial cut-out at 6 o'clock, the splendid mother-of-pearl moon takes centre stage. The display is framed by a night sky with delicate stars that forms an integral part of the dial and is highlighted by a slim, radiant ring.

The construction of the moon phase display is also a complete novelty at Glashütte Original: its flat disc, which rotates beneath the dial window, covers almost the entire calibre. The manufactory’s engineers have successfully integrated the component in a particularly space-saving manner, so that it does not add to the height of the movement. The disk is covered with a thin layer of mother-of-pearl on which four circles arise, positioned at regular intervals to represent the night sky. Depending on the variant, its profile is created either with inlays of shimmering dark Tahitian mother-of-pearl or by carefully applying dark blue lacquer to the underside. Delicate stars, printed from above, illuminate the firmament. Precision gearing ensures that the Serenade Luna moon phase will need to be adjusted by one day only after a period of 122 years. Adjustment is handled via the crown and proves to be remarkably simple. A ball bearing freewheel decouples the flow of power from the gear train to the crown, thus allowing the rotating moon phase to be adjusted in one direction while the watch continues to run.

Modern mechanics without compromise

Suitability for everyday use and user-friendliness were of paramount importance in the development of the Calibre 35. The automatic movement with integrated moon phase has a diameter of 26 mm and measures only 3.8 mm in height. The extremely low tolerances in the production of such a small mechanical calibre posed another challenge to the manufactory’s engineers and watchmakers. Nevertheless, the spring barrel was allotted considerable space in order to implement a 60-hour power reserve. The oscillating system of the watch was specifically redesigned for the small format and is fitted with four regulating screws on the balance wheel. It is equipped with a silicon hairspring resistant to magnetic fields and temperature fluctuations, and oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz. The movement is regulated in five positions in order to ensure maximum precision and reliability.

A graceful work of art

The golden rotor can be seen through the transparent case back as it makes its rounds above the movement. For the first time at Glashütte Original, both the oscillating mass and the rotor plate are made of solid gold. The precious metal has a high density and is thus perfectly suited for this purpose. The surface of the rotor is adorned with a fine seashell- pattern guilloche, while the path of the oscillating mass presents a refined perlage finish. Beneath the rotor, one can admire the finely finished movement: the famous three-quarter plate, the wheel bridge with stripe finish, the reduction gear with sunburst finish, along with many other unmistakable features of Glashütte artistry.

Luxury timepieces for every occasion

As the Serenade Luna stands for modern femininity in all its diversity, it appears at its premiere in four different versions. All models present a round case with a diameter of 32.5 mm and a sapphire crystal case back. Sparkling diamonds enhance the hour markers, and the seconds hand features an infinity sign, discreetly echoing a stylistic element of the Lady Serenade collection. A round, subtly engraved recess at the centre of the dial enables a multi-layered architecture.

The versions differ significantly in terms of their colours and personalities: two stainless steel models present a white mother-of-pearl dial and are available with or without a diamond-set bezel. They are worn on a blue Louisiana alligator leather strap or on a metal bracelet with a folding clasp. Identical straps are offered for another stainless steel model featuring a blue dial with a delicate sunray finish. The red gold version contrasts with its own unique look: the golden green of the dial lends the sunray finish a shimmering surface, and the bezel sparkles with 48 diamonds. This creation is worn on a colour-matched Louisiana alligator leather strap. All leather straps are fitted with a quick-change mechanism. The crown of the Serenade Luna has been completely re-designed: on the versions featuring a diamond bezel, their graceful blossom shape is adorned with a rose-cut diamond, whereas on the version with a smooth bezel it is topped by a moonstone cabochon.

A new mechanical original with feminine charm

The new Serenade Luna line celebrates modern femininity and reflects the most demanding technical requirements. It reveals a new, feminine facet of the traditional Saxon manufactory, yet retains its unmistakable signature.
